Blue 1 class has a total number of 11 pupils. It is led by Mrs Marie Dobson and is supported by Mr David Brooks, Mrs Myra Woodhouse, Mrs Helen Cairns and Mrs Verity Smith. Blue 1 also has access to a wide range of experienced professionals who work with individuals or groups of children to meet specific needs. Mrs Julie McKenna teaches Music, Mrs Boreham teaches Art and Mrs Smith teaches the children Challenge and Development on a Friday.
Within the structured learning environment the children use visual timetables and additional visual prompts to support their development and to enhance individualised learning. The children have full access to the National Curriculum and Religious Education. Learning is planned to suit their individual needs. This could be within whole class work, small groups or 1:1 support. This varied learning approach allows the children to develop independently, increase their confidence and enhance their self-esteem. It also gives them the knowledge and practical skills required and the opportunity to learn through visual, auditory and kin-aesthetic prompts. The children participate to a variety of fine motor control, pre-writing and scissor control activities within class every morning to enhance their handwriting skills
Reading books are sent home every night and we encourage parents to read with their child each night. Pupils in Blue 1 class eat their lunch in the Café and play outside at lunchtimes on the yard with other classes from Benton Dene School. An indoor sanctuary is also available. PE sessions are every Monday and children go swimming on alternative Friday’s at the Lakeside Centre in Killingworth. Pupils in Blue 7 eat their lunch in the Café, a quiet diner. We play outside at lunchtimes on the yard with other classes from Benton Dene School. An indoor sanctuary is also available.
