Numeracy

The BDS Maths Curriculum is divided into a variety of categories which are designed to allow personalised learning and progression in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum i.e. pupils access subject matter at the point relevant to their stage of learning.

The subject matter as set out in our Benton Dene Assessment tool is as follows:

The Benton Dene Maths Curriculum will work to support teachers understanding of these areas so as best to plan effective, high quality lessons which will enhance the children’s understanding of Mathematical concepts, leading to greater Mastery based on each child’s level of understanding.

Coverage

There is no expectation for each child to cover all of the subject matter each year. Each child should be taught to their stage of learning. The curriculum sets out those next steps within a subject area so that staff are aware of the required stages of learning

Multiplication Checks

At Benton Dene there is no statutory requirement for every child in Year 4 to take the online Multiplication Check. The children at Benton Dene will have access to daily Mathematic work to ensure they continually develop their understanding of Maths, putting it into practice wherever possible.

Testing

There is no statutory requirement for the children of Benton Dene to participate in testing at Key Stage 1 or 2. Those children working at the appropriate levels will be targeted to do so and will complete the Key Stage 1 or 2 SATs paper with the appropriate amount of support.

Using and Applying

The Strand of Using and Applying is not taught directly at Benton Dene, instead being taught discreetly throughout the Mathematics Curriculum. The areas below have been broken down into the BDS Levels with links to the other Strands in the Curriculum to demonstrate those links between the subject content and the children’s application of their learning in the wider context of Maths and their education.

Maths games don't have to be computer-based, though.  There are lots of ways in which you can bring maths to life for your child through simple games and activities.  Whether out shopping, using the context of money to help develop your child's skills, or helping them to better understand measurement when baking or putting together the new rabbit's hutch, there's always an opportunity for a 'maths moment'!  

Board games can be great for developing a child's maths skills too!  Playing these can be a really powerful way for young children to become comfortable with our number system, spotting patterns and literally playing with numbers.

Dice are an amazing way to bring numbers to life, and can be used in so many creative ways to have fun... and learn at the same time!
