At Benton Dene our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for History; providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum that encompasses the British Values throughout; ensuring the progressive development of historical concepts, knowledge and skills; and for the children to study life in the past.
At Benton Dene we aim for a high quality History curriculum to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Our teaching equips pupils with knowledge about the history of Britain and how it has influenced and been influenced by the wider world; know and understand about significant aspects of the history of the wider world; changes in living memory and beyond living memory; learn about the lives of significant people of the past; understand the methods of historical enquiry and be able to ask and answer questions. We want children to enjoy and love learning about history by gaining this knowledge and skills, not just through experiences in the classroom, but also with the use of fieldwork and educational visits.
Our History curriculum includes half termly topics for all children from Early Years to Year 6. We offer a high-quality history education that will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching should equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, investigate and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the lives of others through time, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups.
Through the History curriculum delivered at Benton Dene outcomes in the History books evidence a broad and balanced history curriculum and demonstrate the children’s acquisition of identified key knowledge and vocabulary. Using our ‘thinking hats’ strategy the children review their learning and are asked what they have learned comparative to their starting points at the end of every topic. Emphasis is placed on analytical thinking and questioning which helps pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world and are curious to know more about the past.
